Sad, sad news....BOO HOO HOO!!!

Ok, nothing major I promise or is it?? It all started when they asked me to do the glucose test at my 12 week appointment. I was a bit nervous about it. They said it was because Aidan was over 9#'s and because my BMI (body mass index) was over a certain point. I complied because of course I want to know if I am at risk or if I actually did have diabetes so that I could take care of myself and my unborn baby.

Long story short, I took the test on Monday morning after my appointment. I drank the nasty orange drink and thought I might lose my breakfast and got heartburn on top of that. Pretty picture I know but it happened. So I knew that I had to have my blood drawn an hour after I finished the nasty drink. So I drank it in the parking garage before my appointment. Aidan and my friends daughter that I'm watching this summer cheered me on. I had 5 minutes to down the nasty thing.

So I went to my appointment, Aidan had an accident, we HEARD the baby's heartbeat for the FIRST time!! That was the best part of the visit!! Then they gave me my lab slip so that I could get my blood drawn. Off we went. The first side they got the needle in the right spot but nothing came out at all. WEIRD!! I swear I am not an alien, or at least I don't think I am. Then another gal drew off the other side and sure enough magic!! It didn't even hurt when she poked me. The other side hurt though. Hmm, magic touch I think so.

Well last night I got the call from the midwife saying, "we got your lab results and please call so that we can go over them." It was 7pm when I got the message so I called at 8:02am. Not a minute later. Sure enough I was put straight through (the best part of calling at the time they open). So they like your sugars to be at 140, mine was are you ready for this?? 175!!! YIKES!! They said at 180 they don't hesitate to refer you. I had 2 options, just take the referral since I was so darn close or do the 3 hour test with 4 blood draws and more nasty drink. Guess what I took, the referral so now I get to do the "diabetic diet" and test my sugars and such. I don't know exactly what it will all entail, I'll post after that appointment, but as of now I am assuming at minimum it will be a diet change (what more can I change?? seriously) and possibly checking my sugars consistently. Just what I need another thing to do. UGH!!! Oh well, baby will be healthier because of it.

On the flip side they may do more u/s (ultrasounds) later in the pregnancy because of the diabetes. I was happy about that. The more opportunity to see my handsome OR beautiful child the better!! So yea that is what is going on with me!! Thinking about that lovely nasty drink makes me have heartburn...no fun. So, wish me luck as I start this journey of diabetes, let's hope that it doesn't continue after baby is born because I will be super sad if it does. Motivation to get in better shape after the little one is here?? I think so!! So here's what I am asking of all my 2 readers (if that). If anyone out there has or has had diabetes, gestational diabetes or has known anyone who has had it and can fill me in on what I'm up against that would be more than wonderful!! Either email or comment on here and let me know.

Oh and thank you for listening to me feel sorry for myself for a bit. I am giving myself today and maybe tomorrow to feel badly for myself and then I'm going to suck it up and get on with life. Can't feel badly for myself forever right?!! On the flip side I had the BEST sandwich on the face of the earth for lunch, it was a croissant and I put a bit of mayo and honey mustard on it then a bit of cheese and ham. Only thing missing was lettuce. So that was the best part of today so far. I'm tired haven't been sleeping well lately, to hot to and I have to use the bathroom ALL the stinking time. So, anyhoo, I think I still need something because apparently that sandwich didn't fill me up. I'm tempted to eat another but I think I'll opt for fruit first and see if that helps. I'll try and wait until we go in the pool for another sandwich so that I have something to help me last until dinner. Hope you are all having a wonderful summer!!
